Following the Light

Filed under:
Golden light spreads across the sea beneath an amber and rose sky, with mountains and a quiet coastline stretching toward the horizon.

I imagine being able to move around the world at the pace of the rising sun. I would find the place where its first light meets the sky and align myself there, moving just quickly enough to remain in that beginning.

The earth would keep turning beneath me. Mountains would pass, then open water, then the rooftops of a town beginning to wake. I would follow that narrow brightness along the horizon, watching it reach another shore. Wherever I went, the morning would be arriving with me.

I wonder what the world would look like from there, always at the edge of being revealed. How many colors might I notice if I could stay with that first light a little longer? I would have time to watch the faintest gold spread across the water, to see the clouds brighten from underneath.

And when I was ready for evening, I would find the other edge of the day.

There, I would align myself with the sun as it met the colors in the sky. I would move with the amber and rose, keeping that beautiful display before me as the landscape changed below. The light would fall across unfamiliar fields and distant windows, and I would follow it beyond every place I knew.

For a while, I could live along those edges. Morning when I wanted to watch everything begin. Evening when I wanted to linger beneath those colors.

Following the light around the world, just to hold the moment.
