Psalm 150 | Let Everything That Has Breath Praise the Lord

“Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty expanse.
Praise Him for His mighty deeds;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness.”

“Praise Him with trumpet sound;
Praise Him with harp and lyre.
Praise Him with tambourine and dancing;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flute.
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with resounding cymbals.”

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord!”

Context and Meaning

Psalm 150 is the climactic conclusion of the entire Book of Psalms and the closing note of the Hallelujah Psalms (146–150).
It is a pure and powerful call to praise — every line begins and ends with worship.

This psalm answers four simple but profound questions about worship:

  1. Where? – In His sanctuary and throughout His creation.
  2. Why? – Because of His mighty acts and incomparable greatness.
  3. How? – With every instrument, every expression, and every breath.
  4. Who?Everyone and everything that has breath.

It’s the crescendo of the Psalter — a universal, unrestrained, joyful outpouring of praise to the Almighty God.

Key Themes:

  1. The Universality of Praise: All creation is called to worship God (v. 1, 6).
  2. God’s Mighty Works: His deeds in creation, redemption, and providence are worthy of song (v. 2).
  3. The Excellence of God’s Nature: We worship not only for what He has done but for who He is (v. 2).
  4. Variety in Worship: Instruments, movement, and creativity all express genuine praise (v. 3–5).
  5. The Breath of Life as Praise: Every living being exists to glorify God (v. 6).

Reflection and Impact

Psalm 150 calls us to joyful, total, and unceasing praise, uniting heaven and earth in one final hallelujah:

  • Praise fills all creation“Praise God in His sanctuary, praise Him in His mighty expanse” (v. 1) echoes Psalm 19:1: the heavens declare the glory of God.
  • Praise for who God is and what He does“For His mighty acts and excellent greatness” (v. 2) aligns with Revelation 15:3: great and marvelous are Your works, O Lord God Almighty.
  • Praise through all expressions of art and sound“With trumpet, harp, and dancing” (v. 3–4) connects to 2 Samuel 6:14: David danced before the Lord with all his might.
  • Praise with holy boldness“With loud and resounding cymbals” (v. 5) recalls Psalm 33:3: play skillfully with a shout of joy!
  • Praise as life’s purpose“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” (v. 6) mirrors Isaiah 43:21: the people I formed for Myself will declare My praise.

Application

  • Make Praise Your Lifestyle: Let worship mark every day and every season.
  • Use Every Gift for His Glory: Whatever your instrument or talent, offer it to God in joy.
  • Praise in Spirit and Truth: Worship not only outwardly but from the depths of your heart.
  • Join the Symphony of Creation: Recognize that all living things exist to honor Him.
  • End Every Day with Praise: Let the final word of your life echo the final word of the Psalter—Hallelujah!

Closing Thought

The Book of Psalms begins with meditation on God’s Word (Psalm 1) and ends with unrestrained praise (Psalm 150).
It teaches us that the journey of faith leads from trust to triumph, from prayer to praise.

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!”
