Imagine a message waiting beneath your thumb.
You have explained yourself carefully. You have included the sentence that will make the other person feel what you felt. Reading it back, you can already hear the satisfaction of finally being understood.
Then you hesitate.
Perhaps the words are accurate. Perhaps they would also wound exactly where you intended.
You set the phone down.
There is a kind of obedience that leaves very little evidence. A sentence disappears. A voice softens. A question takes the place of an accusation.
No one sees the answer you almost gave.
God does.
He knows how quickly hurt reaches for a weapon. He knows the effort it takes to ask, “Help me understand,” when you would rather say, “You never listen.”
Following Christ reaches into that small space between the impulse and the response. We bring Him our anger while it is still hot, our need to defend ourselves while the argument still sounds convincing.
Sometimes we send the words and have to return with an apology. Sometimes, by His grace, we pause long enough to choose differently.
That pause can become a place of prayer.
Lord, help me speak truthfully. Help me see the person who will receive these words. Help me entrust to You what I cannot make them understand.
The conversation may still be difficult. The truth may still need saying.
But the next sentence can begin with mercy.
