Psalm 110 | The Reign of the Messiah

“The Lord says to my Lord:
‘Sit at My right hand
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.’”

“The Lord will stretch out Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,
‘Rule in the midst of Your enemies.’”

“Your people will volunteer freely on the day of Your power;
In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
Your youth are to You as the dew.”

“The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,
‘You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.’”

“The Lord is at Your right hand;
He will shatter kings on the day of His wrath.”

“He will judge among the nations,
He will fill them with corpses,
He will shatter the chief men over a broad country.”

“He will drink from the brook by the wayside;
Therefore, He will lift up His head.”

Context and Meaning

Psalm 110 is a messianic psalm of David, frequently cited in the New Testament to point to Jesus Christ. The opening line reveals a divine conversation: “The Lord says to my Lord…”, distinguishing God the Father speaking to someone David also calls “Lord.”

This figure is both:

  • A King enthroned at God’s right hand (v. 1–3), and
  • A Priest forever, not from the Levitical line but Melchizedek’s (v. 4).

The latter verses (v. 5–7) portray a righteous and victorious Judge who will defeat all opposition and rule the nations.

Psalm 110 uniquely portrays the Messiah as both King and Priest, and it is the most quoted psalm in the New Testament.

Reflection and Impact

Psalm 110 invites us to worship Jesus Christ as:

  • The enthroned Lord, exalted above every power.
  • The Eternal Priest, who intercedes on behalf of His people.
  • The Victorious King, who will conquer all rebellion and establish righteous judgment.

This psalm confirms:

  • Jesus’ exaltation after His resurrection (Hebrews 1:3),
  • His unique priesthood (Hebrews 7),
  • And His coming reign over the nations (1 Corinthians 15:25).

Application

  • Worship the Exalted Christ: Acknowledge Him as Lord over all areas of your life.
  • Trust in His Intercession: He is your Priest forever, mediating on your behalf before the Father.
  • Live in Loyalty and Readiness: Be one of those who “volunteer freely” in the day of His power.
  • Rest in His Coming Justice: Every injustice and enemy will be brought low in His perfect timing.

Closing Thought

Psalm 110 lifts our eyes to the throne of heaven, where Jesus Christ reigns. He is not only our King but our eternal Priest—mighty to save, sure to rule.
“You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”
