The Pursuit of Wisdom Brings Security

Proverbs 2; I die daily devotional.

9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice And equity and every good course.

RIGHTEOUSNESS

How do we define the nature of righteousness if we, being unrighteous, are incapable of living as such on this side of eternity? I’ll venture to say that we can be righteous on this side of eternity, or else the value of this verse, is without power. So then… what is righteousness? A friend of mine gave me the perfect answer for this, “Jesus”. And of course; I completely agree! In becoming a partaker of the Holy Spirit and tasting the age to come as revealed in the book of Hebrews teaches us about this nature of righteousness while existing in a body prone to unrighteousness.

Heb 6:4 — For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

There is a process, no different than a child being reared by their parents until they become adults for themselves, so too is there a spiritual rearing to a life eternal. And we have right now, today, to start educating our children about the nature of righteousness according to the Word of God.

JUSTICE

What is justice? This question brings me to Solomon:

1Ki 3:23 — Then the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son who is living, and your son is the dead one’; and the other says, ‘No! For your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’” 24 The king said, “Get me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 The king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.” 26  Then the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for she was deeply stirred over her son and said, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him.” But the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him!” 27 Then the king said, “Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him. She is his mother.” 28 When all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had  handed down, they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.

EQUITY

Deu 10:17 — “For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.

you will discern

I’d love to hear your testimony, where you are with regards to this ability to discern; because us Christians, the Church, are called to exercise this power through the living Word of God that bears witness to our souls while on this earth. We have a tremendous honor and responsibility to the work and will of God. To believe in Jesus Christ is to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit for Salvation, and to share it, not hide it; there are children in need of being reared up spiritually in the Lord for that coming day of His return. Am I ready? Are you ready? Are we ready?

But most importantly; are our children ready?

  • What do you think about this?
  • Are you righteous? (If not, why?)
  • Are you being discipled by the Word of God?
  • Where are you in your faith?
  • What course are you on? (Is it good?)

Proverbs 2 (NASB)—blueletterbible.org
1 My son, if you will receive my words And treasure my commandments within you, 2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; 3 For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; 4 If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the LORD And discover the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come  knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 Guarding the paths of justice, And He preserves the way of His godly ones. 9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice And equity and every good course. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 Discretion will guard you, Understanding will watch over you, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things; 13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who delight in doing evil And rejoice in the perversity of evil; 15 Whose paths are crooked, And who are devious in their ways; 16 To deliver you from the strange woman, From the adulteress who flatters with her words; 17 That leaves the companion of her youth And forgets the covenant of her God; 18 For her house sinks down to death And her tracks lead to the dead; 19 None who go to her return again, Nor do they reach the paths of life. 20 So you will walk in the way of good men And keep to the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright will live in the land And the blameless will remain in it; 22 But the wicked will be cut off from the land And the treacherous will be uprooted from it.

COMMENTARY

Matthew Henry (P2-V9) Commentary
Pro 2:10-22

The scope of these verses is to show,

  • 1. What great advantage true wisdom will be of to us; it will keep us from the paths of sin, which lead to ruin, and will therein do us a greater kindness than if it enriched us with all the wealth of the world.
  • 2. What good use we should make of the wisdom God gives us; we must use it for our own guidance in the paths of virtue, and for the arming of us against temptations of every kind.
  • 3. By what rules we may try ourselves whether we have this wisdom or no. This tree will be known by its fruits; if we be truly wise, it will appear by our care to avoid all evil company and evil practices.

This wisdom will be of use to us,

  • I. For our preservation from evil, from the evil of sin, and, consequently, from the evil of trouble that attends it.
