Psalm 105 | Remember the Wonders God Has Done

“Give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name;
Make His deeds known among the peoples.
Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
Tell of all His wonders.”

“Boast in His holy name;
May the heart of those who seek the Lord be joyful.
Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face continually.”

“Remember His wonders which He has done,
His marvels and the judgments spoken by His mouth,
You descendants of His servant Abraham,
You sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!”

God’s Covenant and Faithfulness

“He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
He has remembered His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded to a thousand generations,”

“The covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac.
Then He confirmed it to Jacob as a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant,”

“Saying, ‘To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the portion of your inheritance,’”

A Historical Retelling of God’s Works
The psalm continues with a recounting of God’s providence:

  • Protection during the patriarchal journeys
  • God’s provision in Egypt
  • The rise of Joseph and deliverance through Moses
  • The plagues on Egypt and miracles in the wilderness
  • God’s faithful guidance into the Promised Land

“So He brought His people out with joy,
His chosen ones with a joyful shout.
And He gave them the lands of the nations,
And they inherited the labor of the peoples,”

“So that they might keep His statutes,
And comply with His laws—
Praise the Lord!”

Context and Meaning

Psalm 105 is a historical psalm, recounting how God faithfully fulfilled His covenant to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It serves as both a call to praise and a lesson in remembering—emphasizing the importance of knowing and retelling the mighty acts of the Lord.

It reminds Israel—and believers today—that God’s faithfulness spans generations and His word never fails.

Key Themes:

  1. Praise Anchored in Remembrance: We worship not blindly but because of what God has done (v. 1–5).
  2. Covenant Faithfulness: God kept His promises from Abraham to the Exodus and beyond (v. 8–11).
  3. Divine Providence: God’s sovereignty over history ensures that His people are guided, preserved, and blessed (v. 12–45).
  4. Response to God’s Faithfulness: The people are to keep His statutes and live in gratitude and obedience (v. 45).

Reflection and Impact

Psalm 105 urges us to look back at God’s track record as the foundation for our present trust:

  • Remembering Builds Faith: Knowing what God has done strengthens our trust in what He will do.
  • God Keeps His Promises: Every promise He makes—He fulfills (2 Corinthians 1:20).
  • History Is His Story: God is active in the course of nations and personal lives—directing and redeeming.
  • Praise Is the Right Response: Recalling God’s wonders leads to thankful, obedient living.

Application

  • Write Your Own History with God: Keep a record of answered prayers and providence.
  • Tell Others About His Wonders: Share stories of God’s faithfulness—your testimony inspires.
  • Seek God Daily: Like the psalm says, “Seek His face continually.”
  • Live in Covenant Gratitude: Obey God’s word as a joyful response to His goodness.

Closing Thought

Psalm 105 celebrates the God who remembers His covenant and redeems His people with power and love.
“He brought His people out with joy… so that they might keep His statutes.”
