Psalm 37 | Trust in the Lord and Do Good

Don’t Envy the Wicked

“Do not get upset because of evildoers,
Do not be envious of wrongdoers.
For they will wither quickly like the grass,
And decay like the green plants.”

Trust and Delight in the Lord

“Trust in the Lord and do good;
Live in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring out your righteousness like the light,
And your judgment like the noonday.”

Be Patient and Avoid Anger

“Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him;
Do not get upset because of one who is successful in his way,
Because of the person who carries out wicked schemes.
Cease from anger and abandon wrath;
Do not get upset; it leads only to evildoing.”

The Righteous Will Inherit the Land

“For evildoers will be eliminated,
But those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.
Yet a little while and the wicked person will be no more;
And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there.
But the humble will inherit the land
And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.”

God Supports the Righteous

“The wicked plots against the righteous,
And gnashes at him with his teeth.
The Lord laughs at him,
For He sees that his day is coming.
Better is the little of the righteous
Than the abundance of many wicked.
For the arms of the wicked will be broken,
But the Lord sustains the righteous.”

The Lord Upholds and Guides

“The steps of a man are established by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
When he falls, he will not be hurled down,
Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand.”

David’s Testimony of God’s Faithfulness

“I have been young and now I am old,
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
Or his descendants begging for bread.
All day long he is gracious and lends,
And his descendants are a blessing.”

Turn From Evil and Do Good

“Depart from evil and do good,
So you will dwell forever.
For the Lord loves justice
And does not abandon His godly ones;
They are protected forever.”

Peace for the Righteous, Judgment for the Wicked

“The wicked watches for the righteous
And seeks to kill him.
The Lord will not leave him in his hand
Or let him be condemned when he is judged.
Wait for the Lord and keep His way,
And He will exalt you to inherit the land;
When the wicked are eliminated, you will see it.”

A Final Word of Hope

“Mark the blameless person, and behold the upright;
For the person of peace will have a future.
But wrongdoers will altogether be destroyed;
The future of the wicked will be eliminated.
But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength in time of trouble.
The Lord helps them and rescues them;
He rescues them from the wicked and saves them,
Because they take refuge in Him.”

Context and Meaning

Psalm 37 is a wisdom psalm, written by David in his later years, offering counsel on how to live righteously in a world where the wicked seem to prosper. It contrasts the fleeting success of evildoers with the eternal security of those who trust in God.

Key Themes:

  1. Don’t Be Distracted by the Wicked: Their success is short-lived—trust God’s timeline and justice (v. 1–2, 10).
  2. Trust, Delight, Commit, and Wait: These are not passive commands—they are active postures of faith (v. 3–7).
  3. God Cares for the Righteous: He guides their steps, sustains them in trouble, and blesses their descendants (v. 23–26).
  4. The End of the Wicked is Certain: Though they may prosper temporarily, they will be cut off, while the righteous will inherit the land (v. 9, 34, 38).
  5. Peace Belongs to the Upright: Those who trust and obey God experience lasting peace and a secure future (v. 37).

Psalm 37 teaches us to focus on faithful living rather than being fixated on the prosperity of the wicked.

Reflection and Impact

Psalm 37 encourages long-term, patient faithfulness over short-term envy:

  • Live With Eternal Perspective: Don’t let momentary success of others distract you from your eternal reward (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).
  • Cultivate Faithfulness Where You Are: Bloom in the place God has planted you—He sees and rewards your integrity (Galatians 6:9).
  • God is Your Provider and Protector: He upholds you even when you stumble, and you will not be forsaken (Hebrews 13:5-6).
  • Choose Peace and Goodness Daily: Avoid anger and walk in integrity—your future is secure in the Lord (Romans 12:18-21).

Psalm 37 helps calm anxious hearts and redirect our focus toward trust, patience, and goodness.

Application

  • Pray for a Patient Heart: Ask God to help you wait with faith, not frustration (Psalm 130:5).
  • Refuse to Compare: When others seem to prosper unfairly, remember God’s bigger picture (Psalm 73:16-17).
  • Delight in the Lord Daily: Spend time enjoying God’s presence—it realigns your desires with His (John 15:7).
  • Do Good, Even When It’s Hard: Keep walking in righteousness—your reward is coming (Matthew 5:6).

Closing Thought

Psalm 37 reminds us that faithfulness is not in vain. The righteous are never forgotten, and their future is filled with peace and promise. Trust the Lord, do good, and rest in the truth that He is your strength in every trouble.
