Psalm 11 | Trusting God When Foundations Are Shaken

Confidence in God Amidst Fear

“In the Lord I take refuge;
How can you say to my soul,
‘Flee as a bird to your mountain?
For, behold, the wicked bend the bow,
They have set their arrow on the string
To shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?’”

God’s Sovereign Rule

“The Lord is in His holy temple;
The Lord’s throne is in heaven;
His eyes see, His eyelids test the sons of mankind.
The Lord tests the righteous,
But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
Upon the wicked He will rain coals of fire;
Fire and brimstone and burning wind
Will be the portion of their cup.”

The Lord is Righteous

“For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness;
The upright will see His face.”

Context and Meaning

Psalm 11 is a declaration of unwavering trust in God in the face of danger and uncertainty. It responds to fearful advice that David should flee for safety, but instead, he affirms that his security is in the Lord alone.

Key Themes:

  1. Faith Over Fear: While others urge David to run in fear, he boldly declares his trust in God’s protection (v. 1-3).
  2. God’s Sovereignty: Even when society feels unstable, God remains on His throne, fully aware and in control (v. 4).
  3. God Tests the Righteous: Hardships are not meaningless—God refines and strengthens the righteous through trials (v. 5).
  4. The Fate of the Wicked: God will ultimately bring judgment upon those who love violence and wickedness (v. 6).
  5. The Reward of the Righteous: Those who remain faithful will one day see God’s face, a promise of intimate fellowship and eternal joy (v. 7).

Psalm 11 contrasts fearful human advice with the unshakable security of trusting in God.

Reflection and Impact

This psalm teaches us that our confidence must come from God, not circumstances:

  • Faith Stands Firm When the World Feels Unstable: Even when the “foundations” of society, government, or personal life seem to be crumbling, God remains unchanging and sovereign (Isaiah 26:3).
  • God Sees Everything: The Lord observes both the righteous and the wicked, meaning no evil goes unnoticed (Hebrews 4:13).
  • Trials Are a Test, Not a Sign of Abandonment: God uses difficulties to refine the righteous, but He rejects those who love evil (James 1:2-4).
  • The Righteous Will See God: Those who trust and follow Him will one day behold His glory in eternity (Matthew 5:8).

This psalm encourages believers to remain steadfast in faith, even when fear and uncertainty rise.

Application

  • Refuse to Live in Fear: When facing uncertain or troubling times, take refuge in God’s sovereignty rather than fleeing in fear (2 Timothy 1:7).
  • Remember That God Sees Everything: Whether injustice, persecution, or personal trials, trust that God is watching and will act in His time (Psalm 37:7-9).
  • Let Hardships Strengthen Your Faith: Instead of seeing trials as a reason to doubt, view them as a test of trust in God’s plan (Romans 8:28).
  • Look Forward to Seeing God’s Face: The greatest reward is not just earthly security, but eternal fellowship with God (Revelation 22:4).

Closing Thought

Psalm 11 reminds us that even when the world seems unstable, God’s throne is unshaken. Instead of fleeing in fear, the righteous stand firm, knowing that God sees, tests, and will ultimately reward them.
