Family, today’s Verse of Providence is James 1:14–15, and it brings us to the hidden place where sin begins: desire that is carried away, enticed, conceived, and brought to death.
Table Conversation
I’m so thankful that James addresses us about temptation; he will not let us blame God for what tempts us. He brings the matter close and makes it intimate—the desire within us that can be lured, entertained, fed, and finally carried out until it produces its outcome. Sin does not usually begin with a full-grown disaster. It begins with desire being drawn away from God and given room to imagine life apart from obedience.
How does that sober us?
Desire itself is innocent until… A glance. A thought. A craving. A private fantasy. A little indulgence. A small compromise. A moment of “I deserve this.” But James shows that when desire turns to lust, it takes a direction: it conceives. It gives birth. It grows. And when sin is fully grown, it brings forth death.
That is strong language because sin is not merely a mistake with poor branding. It is deadly. It promises relief and produces bondage. It promises sweetness and produces rot. It promises escape and produces distance from God, damage to others, and disorder in the soul.
This passage presses on my “dirt.” Even now, as I have a mindless distraction in the background of my writing. I’m “watching” Spider-noir, again, but in black and white this time on Prime Video.
James teaches us to pay attention to our desires before lust gives birth.
There is mercy in seeing the process early. If sin has a conception, then desire can be interrupted before lust gives birth. The Spirit can expose what the flesh wants hidden. The Word can divide what we have blurred. Confession can bring desire into the light before it matures into destruction.
So let us not treat desire casually when lust is pulling us away from God.
Let us bring our cravings into the light before they conceive sin.
And let us remember: sin always promises more than it can give and takes more than we thought it would cost.
