The Rewards of Wisdom

Proverbs 3; I die daily devotional.

22 So they will be life to your soul And adornment to your neck. 23 Then you will walk in your way securely And your foot will not stumble. 24  When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

In our few previous devotionals we’ve looked at our Lord as He stayed the course until, ultimately, was put to death by crucifixion. Jhn 19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. But lets not forget, remember our proverb, 23 Then you will walk in your way securely And your foot will not stumble.

Death could not keep Jesus bound by the boundary described as sin just as the apostle Paul said to the Romans, Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Because this Jesus of Nazareth had walked and lived in the flesh of humankind yet, without sin, and so death could not keep Him, the Lord defeated death by His cross; again Paul says to the Corinthians, 1Co 15:56-57 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are free!

We have the victory!

We are no longer bound with shoes that cause us to stumble into death, but our shoes are off because the feet of Jesus is the ground on which we stand—Holy ground. Take your shoes off! For Jesus is Holy ground! Exo 3:5 Then He said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Act 7:33 “But the LORD  said to him, ‘REMOVE YOUR SANDALS FROM YOUR FEET, FOR THE PLACE ON WHICH YOU ARE STANDING IS HOLY GROUND.

Our salvation is made secure by where Jesus is right now, at the right hand of power! Mat 26:64Jesus *said to him, “You have said  it  yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” By grace through faith we stand on Holy ground, keep your feet in the Word of God, don’t turn around!

Don’t shrink back!

Don’t be a coward!

We have work to do, a duty to fulfil, as faithful laborers in the service of God!

Lets go!

1 My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; 2 For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you. 3 Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your body And refreshment to your bones. 9 Honor the LORD from your wealth And from the first of all your produce; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty And your vats will overflow with new wine. 11 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD Or loathe His reproof, 12 For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father  corrects the son in whom he delights. 13 How blessed is the man who finds wisdom And the man who gains understanding. 14 For her profit is better than the profit of silver And her gain better than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than jewels; And nothing you desire compares with her. 16 Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways And all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are all who hold her fast. 19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth, By understanding He established the heavens. 20 By His knowledge the deeps were broken up And the skies drip with dew. 21 My son, let them not vanish from your sight; Keep sound wisdom and discretion, 22 So they will be life to your soul And adornment to your neck. 23 Then you will walk in your way securely And your foot will not stumble. 24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. 25 Do not be afraid of sudden fear Nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes; 26 For the LORD will be your confidence And will keep your foot from being caught. 27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in your power to do it. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it, ”When you have it with you. 29 Do not devise harm against your neighbor, While he lives securely beside you. 30 Do not contend with a man without cause, If he has done you no harm. 31 Do not envy a man of violence And do not choose any of his ways. 32 For the devious are an abomination to the LORD; But He is intimate with the upright. 33 The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the dwelling of the righteous. 34 Though He scoffs at the scoffers, Yet He gives grace to the afflicted. 35 The wise will inherit honor, But fools  display dishonor.

COMMENTARY

Chapter 3

Matthew Henry (P3-V23) Commentary
They are safe and may be easy,

  • (1.) In their motions by day, v. 23. If our religion be our companion, it will be our convoy: “Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely. The natural life, and all that belongs to it, shall be under the protection of God’s providence; the spiritual life, and all its interests, are under the protection of his grace; so that thou shalt be kept from falling into sin or trouble.’ Wisdom will direct us into, and keep us in, the safe way, as far as may be, from temptation, and will enable us to walk in it with holy security. The way of duty is the way of safety. “We are in danger of falling, but wisdom will keep thee, that thy foot shall not stumble at those things which are an offence and overthrow to many, but which thou shalt know how to get over.’

The Pursuit of Wisdom Brings Security

Proverbs 2; I die daily devotional.

21 For the upright will live in the land And the blameless will remain in it;

Wisdom is teaching that the upright will live in the land of promise and the blameless will remain in it.

Where is the land of promise?

Heb 11:8-9 — By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Much like Abraham didn’t know where he was going, neither to do we know where we are going. We are born in dust, raised as dust, and then aware of a world of which dust stretches out into eternity without knowing where eternity ends. We are just here along for the ride so it seems; as the earth is on a trajectory in our solar system with our Milky Way Galaxy.

Where are we going?

Heb 12:22-24 — But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.

We are going to a city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem where there are myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood—which speaks better than the blood of Abel.

Check this out Christian!

Rev 21:1-8 — Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. “But for the cowardly and  unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Our sanctification through faith behaves in a way to change us from a personality of sin, the dominion of Satan, to God. And so the inheritance that we do not yet see although hope for, is very much alive in us by the power of the Holy Spirit as we wait eagerly for our uniting of a new heaven and earth, to the glory of God.

Act 26:18to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an  inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’

Wisdom teaches us how to live free from sin and blameless for remaining in the land of promise that we inherit according to faith in the Word of God while living in the flesh here and now.

We are on a trajectory of salvation in Christ to eternal life in the promise land with Jesus, if indeed, Christ is in us?

Is Christ in you?

2Co 13:5 — Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?

1 My son, if you will receive my words And treasure my commandments within you, 2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; 3 For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; 4 If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the LORD And discover the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come  knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 Guarding the paths of justice, And He preserves the way of His godly ones. 9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice And equity and every good course. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 Discretion will guard you, Understanding will watch over you, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things; 13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who delight in doing evil And rejoice in the perversity of evil; 15 Whose paths are crooked, And who are devious in their ways; 16 To deliver you from the strange woman, From the adulteress who flatters with her words; 17 That leaves the companion of her youth And forgets the covenant of her God; 18 For her house sinks down to death And her tracks lead to the dead; 19 None who go to her return again, Nor do they reach the paths of life. 20 So you will walk in the way of good men And keep to the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright will live in the land And the blameless will remain in it; 22 But the wicked will be cut off from the land And the treacherous will be uprooted from it.

COMMENTARY

Matthew Henry (P2-V21) Commentary
(1.) Because men’s integrity will be their establishment, v. 21. It will be the establishment,

  • [1.] Of their persons: The upright shall dwell in the land, peaceably and quietly, as long as they live; and their uprightness will contribute to it, as it settles their minds, guides their counsels, gains them the good-will of their neighbours, and entitles them to God’s special favour.
  • [2.] Of their families: The perfect, in their posterity, shall remain in it. They shall dwell and remain for ever in the heavenly Canaan, of which the earthly one was but a type.

For her house sinks down to death And her tracks lead to the dead | P2-V18

The Pursuit of Wisdom Brings Security

Proverbs 2; I die daily devotional.

 18 For her house sinks down to death And her tracks lead to the dead;

It’s difficult enough as it is to resist sexual activity when the body calls for it, but then to resist pornography … and if not pornography, fantasies … if not fantasies, masturbation … if not masturbation, lust.

What did our Lord say about lust?

Mat 5:27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into  hell. 30 If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

Jesus warns us about the severity to lust after one another, that it’s better to cut out our eyes than to be thrown into hell because of our lack of self-control.

If you’re honest with yourself about this issue of lust, would you be a person to cut out your eyes to avoid committing adultery. I can honestly say, I didn’t used to be one of those people. Although now, with much discipline and still much more to come; there are times that I would much rather be blind than to experience the temptations that my eyes desire when out in the world to get supplies. My wife knows the deepest and darkest secrets about the man I was, and I am so unworthy of the grace of God that by His mercy you would find this post as a treasure from above to tell you that you’re not alone if you feel that way.

God knew we couldn’t escape hell by this data we hear or read from the scriptures, and that is why Jesus died. So by the power of the Holy Spirit we can now experience repentance from lust, turn to God, and have life. I can look at women now with a knowledge about their attraction while yet resisting the urge to act on that attraction. Don’t get me wrong, it’s the most difficult thing in the world, and it’s not science. This is something you have to go to war against every single day, and you will feel death every single day.

But damn it if my wife isn’t worth death every single day. My woman deserves a man after God’s own heart, and nothing will ever get in the way of that!

And while that might sound stoic, the truth is, I get in my own way every single day; Jesus is the only Man after God’s own heart worthy of my wife’s love and adoration. Jesus is the Husband that no man on earth will ever be.

But here’s the awesome part!

God is making those of us (man or woman) who believe in Jesus into those qualities of His Son, our Lord, Jesus. By faith in the work of the Holy Spirit, our conscience’s are cleansed from lust, and we’re equipped with the will of God to resist sin. The experience of repentance will hurt, the discipline of our heavenly Father is real and alive because He loves us.

Heb 12:7 — It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom  his  father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9  Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for  our  good, so that we may share His holiness. 11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. 12 Therefore,  strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. 15  See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; 16 that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single  meal. 17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

Heb 9:13-15 — For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

Heb 10:19 — Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

Heb 13:17-18 — Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a good conscience, desiring to conduct ourselves honorably in all things.

COMMENTARY

Matthew Henry (P2-V18) Commentary
[2.] How fatal it will prove to those that fall in league with her, v. 18, 19. Let the sufferings of others be our warnings. Take heed of the sin of whoredom; for,

  • First, The ruin of those who are guilty of it is certain and unavoidable, if they do not repent. It is a sin that has a direct tendency to the killing of the soul, the extinguishing of all good affections and dispositions in it, and the exposing of it to the wrath and curse of God and the sword of his justice. Those that live in forbidden pleasures are dead while they live. Let discretion preserve every man, not only from the evil woman, but from the evil house, for the house inclines to death; it is in the road that leads directly to eternal death; and her paths unto Rephaim, to the giants (so some read it), the sinners of the old world, who, living in luxury and excess of riot, were cut down out of time, and their foundation was overthrown with a flood. Our Lord Jesus deters us from sinful pleasures with the consideration of everlasting torments which follow them. Where the worm dies not, nor is the fire quenched. See Mt. 5:28, 29.
  • Secondly, Their repentance and recovery are extremely hazardous: None, or next to none, that go unto her, return again. It is very rare that any who are caught in this snare of the devil recover themselves, so much is the heart hardened, and the mind blinded, by the deceitfulness of this sin. Having once lost their hold of the paths of life, they know not how to take hold of them again, but are perfectly besotted and bewitched with those base lusts. Many learned interpreters think that this caution against the strange woman, besides the literal sense, is to be understood figuratively, as a caution,
    • 1. Against idolatry, which is spiritual whoredom. Wisdom will keep thee from all familiarity with the worshippers of images, and all inclination to join with them, which had for many ages been of such pernicious consequence to Israel and proved so to Solomon himself.
    • 2. Against the debauching of the intellectual powers and faculties of the soul by the lusts and appetites of the body. Wisdom will keep thee from being captivated by the carnal mind, and from subjecting the spirit to the dominion of the flesh, that notorious adulteress which forsakes its guide, violates the covenant of our God, which inclines to death, and which, when it has got an undisturbed dominion, makes the case of the soul desperate.
