THORNFUL ROSE: INTRIGUE

My wife (Laura) and I had a great conversation about the “thorn” in the Apostle Paul’s side, “a messenger of Satan” (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).

Laura found through Dr. Constable’s Notes p. 167 different interpretations about the thorn:

“Three basic suggested interpretations of the thorn are as follows: (1) If flesh is a reference to the body, then it is a physical ailment like an earache, headache, eye trouble, epilepsy, or recurrent fever. (2) If flesh is a reference to the fallen nature, then the thorn could be a temptation. (3) If the expression is figurative, it could refer to persecution or opposition. Most commentators interpret it as a physical ailment.”1

“Many early church Fathers and Reformers understood the thorn to be a spiritual temptation—perhaps a tendency toward pride, or the opposition of Paul’s enemies. Some modern Roman Catholic interpreters take it as a fleshly temptation that assailed Paul’s moral purity. Many modern Protestant interpreters see it as a bodily suffering, namely, some physical illness or infirmity such as bad eyesight, a speech impediment, malaria,2 or epilepsy (cf. Gal. 4:13-15).3 Since the scriptural data does not provide a definite answer, it seems best to suspend judgment on any conclusion. Various commentators have made good cases for every one of the explanations
described above. Probably Paul avoided being explicit so his readers would not focus on his particular form of affliction exclusively.”

In light of Dr. Constable’s Notes given above, there seems to be 3 different approaches to the Apostle Paul’s thorn:

  1. Spiritual Temptation
  2. Fleshly Temptation
  3. Physical Illness or Infirmity

However, what was profound to my wife was how “God used evil for good”, which struck me odd at first because my brain does not make sense of good using evil for good; that to me sounds like evil is nothing more than a tool rather than a force necessitating justice, and thereby making good and evil indistinguishable.

I’m intrigued. So, let’s explore!…

Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.

John 9:9

PRAYER

Thank you Jesus Christ, for sending the Helper— The Holy Spirit that sanctifies us not only to see, but to be changed! I pray, Lord, that those who look upon us as the work of your hands will marvel at what you are doing in the people who believe. Amen.

UNBELIEF

What is the nature of unbelief?

The serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:4-5)

To extract truth from the Word of God for generating lie, is the, idea. That is what I understand the serpent did with the woman, and once that idea-seed germinated, we can see what happened to her perception about the meaning of truth; the consequence by her shift in perception suppressed the truth she knew for a “new” and “improved” “truth” generated by the word of a serpent. The Word of God became suppressed for the “Word” of that serpent that generated the woman’s unbelief for the serpent’s idea and plan to commence.

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings. (Genesis 3:6-7)

Intimacy with my Woman

Segment-4

Women, what do you think the man meant by exclaiming “…bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh”, and what do you think happened after that marriage ceremony? I think any man would say… sex. I mean…that’s what I’d be saying anyway, without meaning it perverted. Here are two adult created beings that I believe God is using to reveal the level of intimacy God has with us. A person who is “single” should be experiencing a much more in-depth level of intimacy with God because, there are no distractions and or stains polluted by this world’s view of marriage; it’s completely meditative and expressed by devotion in serving God (however that looks, I’ll ask a person that decided to be single and completely devoted in serving God – stay tuned).

24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2)

In light of the described marriage verses above, I see that the first man had matured to be ready for a family, a…Son. My train of thought takes me to a place—after this love scene—where I can envision the wife as being pregnant, but remember, the picture or imagery of this husband and wife is—God and Creation. In other words, God (Man) is the very seed implanted into a perfect Creation (Woman); that is the painting—as God is the artist—of what I see. The orgasm could be the reason for discovering the “Big Bang”! Just saying. But anyway, the material of what we see and experience is revealed as a child or children being born. Jesus Christ is that child of God, invisible, but alive, at the right hand of His Father. That is a reason for these verses below, I think…

15 [w]He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For [x]by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He [y]is before all things, and in Him all things [z]hold together. 18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. 19 For [aa]it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the [ab]fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in [ac]heaven.

21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in [ad]the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, [ae]was made a [af]minister. (Colossians 1)
